On July 9th, with the final blast-cleaning treatment of the last structural component, CXHI successfully completed all steel fabrication tasks under the main contract for the Simandou Project. Since the official contract signing in January 2024, the company has delivered 2,340 tons of steel components, covering the entire production process from raw material processing to pre-assembly.
the last steel member of the main contract
The Simandou Iron Ore Mine, one of the world’s largest and highest-quality open-pit hematite deposits, stands as a flagship project in China-Africa industrial cooperation, comprising mining, railway, and port infrastructure. Set for completion by late 2025, it is poised to reshape global iron ore supply chains while serving as a milestone in China’s mining globalization and the world’s green transition.
Project Challenges: Complexity, Precision, and Scale
As a globally watched megaproject, Simandou’s sheer scale and technical demands set a new benchmark in mining construction. The steel structures—core to the project’s stability—demanded flawless fabrication to ensure safety and progress. Faced with diverse structural types and rigorous pre-assembly requirements, CXHI’s team rose to the challenge, combining precision engineering with meticulous execution to meet the highest standards.
1. Structural Diversity
The project included:Low-level conveyor framesPrimary support structures 3D trusses, bents, and transfer towers Walkways, grating, stairs, railings, safety nets, and hoppers, with varying cross-sections and connection methods, precision machining was critical. Complex geometries (e.g., curved trusses, spatial tubular frames) required 3D modeling and CNC cutting for millimeter accuracy.
2. Full-Scale Pre-Assembly: Non-Negotiable
Due to complex on-site installation conditions, 1:1 pre-assembly in the factory was essential to:validate design integrity, detect machining tolerances, prevent installation conflicts.Thousands of bolt holes had to align perfectly, with even minor deviations risking field failures.
3. Material & Welding Excellence
High-strength steel with weather/corrosion-resistant properties EN 1090-2 compliance, with full welding procedure qualifications (WPQ)
Third-party non-destructive testing (NDT) for zero-defect welds.
CXHI’s Winning Strategy
1. Digital Precision & Cutting-Edge Fabrication
Tekla & Navisworks for 3D modeling and BoM generation,Laser cutting ensuring ±1mm tolerance.
2. Modular Segmentation & Pre-Assembly
Oversized components split into factory-fabricated modules,Custom jigs for full-scale pre-assembly verification.
3. Tiered Quality Control
"Three-Check System" (self, peer, and inspector review),Total stations & laser trackers for pre-assembly validation,3D model cross-checking for 100% bolt-hole alignment.
Looking Ahead
While the main contract is fulfilled, additional orders are already in production. The Simandou project has been a testament to Chenxin’s technical prowess and management excellence, delivering "millimeter precision" and "zero-error pre-assembly" for this world-class endeavor.
Moving forward, Chenxin remains committed to high-performance execution, promoting Chinese standards and expertise to advance the Belt and Road Initiative and strengthen the China-Africa community with a shared future.
